Russian MFA: Latvia has begun censoring Russian-language media

The Russian Foreign Ministry has announced that the decision by Latvian's National Electronic Mass Media Council to restrict rebroadcasting of Russian television channel Rossiya RTR in Latvia for a period of six months indicates that the Latvian authorities have begun to censor Russian-language media, and use all means at their disposal to achieve their goals, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry's website, cites LETA.

What is happening in Latvia goes against the country's "professed trust in European values", and "it cannot be interpreted in any other way but ignoring the fundamental principles of freedom of speech and freedom of the press," the ministry said in a statement.

The Russian ministry hopes that international organizations, including the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, will look into the matter.

As reported, the Electronic Mass Media Council has decided to restrict the rebroadcast of Russian television channel Rossiya RTR in Latvia for a period of six months. The council points out that it had observed repeated gross violations in Rossiya RTR broadcasts in 2015, which breached both Latvian and EU regulations.
