Russia Grants New Broadcast License To CNN

Russia has issued a new broadcast license to CNN, nearly three months after the international news station went off the air due to restrictions on foreign-owned media.

Russia's media-regulating agency Roskomnadzor said on March 24 that an order had been given to issue CNN a license allowing it to broadcast nationwide for 10 years.

CNN stopped broadcasting in Russia on December 31, citing "changes in media legislation" as the reason for the shutdown.

Russia passed a law last year that limits foreign ownership of a media outlet to 20 percent while also tightening rules of advertising for cable channels.

CNN is owned by the American media organization Time Warner.

CNN -- which began broadcasting in Russia in the early 1990s -- began talks with Russian officials in January about complying with the new law and going back on air.

Russian deputies threatened to ban CNN last year after it lightheartedly said a Soviet war memorial in Belarus was among the ugliest monuments in the world. CNN later apologized.
