Russian Federation launches largest social media campaign in the last 3 years to curb tobacco use

The Russian Federation started 2015 by launching a large outdoor anti-tobacco campaign. The campaign is estimated to be the largest anti-tobacco social media campaign in Russia in the last 3 years. It is running as a display on 1000 billboards and 3000 street posters, and is supported by a video.

The Russian Federation has one of the highest adult smoking prevalence rates in the European Region (39% GATS results 2010). The Russian government and health community are aware of the consequences smoking has to the health of population as well as to the economy of the country. There have been important tobacco control policy changes over the last years in line with the obligations to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). This campaign is another example of the serious efforts of the country to tackle the tobacco epidemic.
