Russian press distribution market research

In 2014 ARPP has conducted the press distribution market research requested by the Russian Ministry of Communications and Mass Media. An official survey of all Russian Federation subjects’ administrationswas part of the research.

Regional distributors also were surveyed regarding the number of newsagent’s locations. ARPP has analyzed the received information on availability of retail outlets specializing in press distribution (press kiosks) in different regions and cities.

As of November 2014, there are 28,938 kiosks selling periodicals in Russia, or one kiosk per 4,965 Russians.

Of all the federal districts, the availability factor is the highest in the Urals: one kiosk per 3,624 people. The situation is not very different in the Far Eastern Federal District: one kiosk per 3,713 people. The availability is higher in those regions mostly due to the low population density. Printed press is least available in the Siberian and North Caucasian Federal Districts, where there is a serious shortage of kiosks (6,278 and 8,127 people per kiosk correspondingly.)

On the federal subject level the leaders are Kaliningrad and Kaluga Oblasts. Their press availability factor is below 2,000: 1,731 and 1,914 people per kiosk correspondingly.

Other regions from the top ten are: Vladimir Oblast, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Republic of Karelia, Murmansk Oblast, Sakha (Yakutia) Republic, Yaroslavl, Orlov and Ivanovo Oblasts. The availability factor in those regions ranges from 2,388 to 3,058 people per kiosk.

People living in 30 regions of Russian Federation have better access to the newsagents’ than Russian citizens on average, i.e., the availability factor in those regions is less than 4,965 people per kiosk.

The situation is the worst in the Chechen Republic, Mordovia, Adygea, Altai, Tuva, Komi, Ingushetia, Vologda and Karachay-Cherkess Republics, Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs, and Penza Oblast. There are more than 10,000 people per press kiosk in those regions.

In general, the study has demonstrated that the access to newsstands is the best in the cities with million plus population. On average, the availability factor is 4,508 people per kiosk in those cities. In simply large and medium-sized cities the availability factor is considerably worse than the country average and ranges from 5,277 to 8,333 people per retail outlet.
