An unprecedented campaign to boost the number of newsstands in Kiev

The number of newsstands in the Ukranian capital is to double in the near future. Based on the Integrated plan for temporary structures, 802 new kiosks selling printed media will be built (Kiev’s population is 2.9 million).

Those kiosks will be built in addition to the existing 423 (as of January 1, 2014).

According to Andrei Vavrysh, the deputy director of city planning and architecture department, this issue deserved the utmost attention, as temporary facilities intended for selling periodicals are in high demand amongst the population. All safety standards will be respected; for instance, none of the new kiosks will be located within 20 meter radius of a subway exit or a public transportation stop.

It is noteworthy that from now on the Kievians have a say in the matter of newsstands’ locations in the capital. They also can inquire about the location of temporary structures in their neighborhood, according to the Integrated plan. 

The entrepreneurs will have access to the information on the kiosk location limits; they will also have an opportunity to suggest changes to the Integrated plan regarding the temporary facilities locations.

Compared to the Kiev developmentprogram, Russian newsstands are in predicament. In large cities the kiosk chains are rather destroyed than developed. For instance, there are only 1,000 newsstands in Saint-Petersburg (population of 5.1 million), 226 in Omsk (1.2 million), 209 in Ufa (1 million), 133 in Perm (1 million), 124 in Tolyatti (0.72 million), 95 in Orenburg (0.579 million) and the list goes on.

Whatever position is on the current events in Kiev, we would like to call public attention to the fact that our neighboring country starts to put more emphasis on the provision of information to the public. The information war against Russia is being mentioned. The more surprising is the fact that we undermine our own information space and press distribution system. Hopefully, the example of Kiev will help us in reaching out to the regional governments of Russian Federation and prove to them the necessity of expanding the kiosk chains in our cities and towns.
