Since January 2012 book circulations in Russia have decreased by 6%

According to the statistics of the Russian Book Chamber, for the first 8 months of 2012 the domestic book industry has been falling. But Rosstat’s report shows that book production have increased in the period from January to August.

If we compare the Russian Book Chamber’s statistics for the first 8 months of 2012 with the same period of 2011, we will see an obvious downward trend in production.

From January to August 2012 there was issued 78,147 printing units of books and pamphlets, what is 4 percent less than that in January-August 2011, when it was issued 81,365 units. Total books circulation amounted to 368,155,000 copies for 8 months of 2012, 6 percent down compared to the last year's 391,883,000 units.

However, it is important to say that the book industry statistics have been improved since the first half of this year, when the circulation decline stood at 13.5 percent level.

The Russian Book Chamber’s data is traditionally on the contrary to the Federal Service of State Statistics’ numbers. Rosstat claims that the books production in the publishing industry have grown by 4.6 percent from January to August 2012 comparing to the same periodof 2011.
